Urban sauna culture in Oslo has largely developed in relation to the fjord. Limited access to the waterfront has led to exploration of how to establish sauna facilities further into the city, making sauna bathing accessible to a broader audience while also contributing to the creation of new urban synergies and meeting places in the city.
Therefore, it is interesting to look at a model where the sauna, along with other similar public health initiatives, can play a role in the social and cultural development of the districts in Oslo. It also represents an opportunity to explore how such institutions can be integrated into the urban environment to promote cohesion and well-being among the city's population.
In January 2024, a feasibility study was initiated by Oslo Sauna Association, Norwegian Building Ceramics Association (NBKF) and Transborder to form the basis for the establishment of a pilot neighborhood sauna. The study consists of a reference collection, a location study, and a study for one selected location for a neighborhood sauna, as well as an overview of relevant material strategies.
